Well if you want your hard work off the ice to pay off, a well balanced healthy diet is key. There is no point doing sprints and a big cardio workout to follow it up with a big mac and a six pack of nuggets (no offense Macca’s and we know you now have a healthy choice menu – and infact you just got a free plug).

Your body needs the right fuel to perform at it’s best. This also becomes a big test of discipline, avoiding those vending machines and choosing a banana over a packet of chips. Now we won’t go into specific’s into what you should eat exactly as everyone is different but lets cover some basics on what you should be working on.

a) Three big meals breakfast, lunch and dinner with healthy snacks in between such as Muesli bars and fruit. Alot of people avoid breakfast which as most know is the most important meal of the day. Wake up earlier so you can make sure you don’t miss it due to rushing out the door.

b) Avoid junk food. This is a general rule and easier said than done believe me. But if you can make this a general habit, you are going a long way.

c) Water. Everyone knows that you should be drinking 1-2 litres of water a day. Hydration plays a big part in ice hockey, especially on game day! Drink plenty of water the day before and on game day so you are hydrated to help your endurance and stamina in the game.
Everything is about making good habits, like we mentioned with flexibility. Do whatever you can to avoid the junk food, maybe even think of them as an opponent trying to stop you from winning the championship next season.

Developing good habits is the basics of personal development and growth. Everything we do is the result of a habit that was previously taught to us. Unfortunately, not all the habits that we have are good, that’s why we are constantly trying to grow and improve.
Health habits

  • Exercise 30 minutes every day. Especially if you don’t do much movement while working, it’s essential that you get some daily exercise. 30 minutes every day are the minimum recommended for optimal health.
  • Eat breakfast every day. Breakfast is the more important meal of the day, yet so many people skip it.

  • Sleep 8 hours. Sleep deprivation is never a good idea. You may think that you are gaining time by sleeping less, when in reality you are only gaining stress and tiredness. 8 hours are a good number of hours for most people, along with an optional 20 minutes nap after lunch.
  • Eat 3 portions of fruits and vegetables every day. Our body and brain loves getting vegetables and fruit, so I highly recommend eating as much of them as possible. Three portions is the dose that’s usually recommended by many health associations.
  • Eat fish. Fish is rich of omega 3 and other healthy elements. At least one meal per week of fish should be enough for getting all these nutrients.
  • Drink one glass of water when you wake up. When you wake up, your body is dehydrated and needs liquid. Make the habit of drinking one glass of water after you wake up in the morning. Also, drink more during the day.
  • Eliminate Stress as much as possible. It is a health-killer.
  • Avoid soda. Soda is often one of the most unhealthy beverage you can find. Limit your consumption of soda as much as possible and you’re body will be grateful for that.
  • Keep your body clean. This is not a plea for spending your day in front of the mirror, but a minimum of personal care is essential.
  • If you smoke, stop it. There is absolutely no reason to smoke, and quitting is possible.
  • If you drink, stop it. Same as above. Don’t think that alcohol will solve your problems. It never does. The only exception is one glass of wine per day during meals.
  • Take the stairs. This is just a hack that forces you to do a minimum of exercise. Instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs.
